MAKENI, Sierra Leone - The ILO, Opportunity Salone programme focuses on supporting local SMEs businesses in value chain and in performing routine maintenance of the feeder roads. One of the businesses supported is Country House Construction, which has been empowered to maintain a feeder road from Mayagba to Makankoi villages with the aim to boost economic activities, create access to communities and connect people for economic benefits.

The company Country House Construction is owned and managed by Daniel Conteh, who is a trained and certified civil engineer with vast experience in the construction field. His expertise has won him many contracts including, but not limited to, maintaining feeder roads in the northern part of the country. Thanks to the trainings provided by the International Labour Organization (ILO), Daniel has been able to employ over twenty young people to work with him in his construction business.

With the help of the ILO, Daniel has been able to train a good number of youths to acquire labour-based skills in feeder road routine maintenance, which has led to the increase in skilled labour for his community and environs. He has invested in his community by providing it with power supply through a Solar Powered facility, which also provided an added security for his people. Daniel is grateful to the ILO and the EU for providing him with a platform to contribute to his community.
