Empowerment of rural informal workers through advocacy, skills development and outreach

This project is funded by the ILO-Japan Social Safety Net (SSN) fund and managed by the ILO’s Bureau of Workers Activities (ACTRAV) and delivered through CO-Suva in collaboration with the Fiji Trades Union Congress (FTUC) and Papua New Guinea Trades Union Congress (PNGTUC).

Project launch, Nadi, Fiji. The project aims to support the transition of workers in the informal/rural economy towards formality, through:

  1. advocacy of ILO’s Transition from the informal to the formal economy Recommendation (No. 204) and relevant national laws;
  2. provision of skills and vocational training and support the formation of social and solidarity enterprises (associations/ cooperatives);
  3. promotion of social dialogue among relevant stakeholders; and
  4. formation of workers’ organisations.
These objectives are in line with the priorities of both national unions, contributes to ILO P&B 1.2.1 (Workers’ organizations with innovative strategies to attract new groups of workers or to improve their services) and SDGs 1 (no poverty), 5 (gender equality), 8 (decent work and economic growth), 10 (reduced inequalities) and 17 (partnerships for the goals).
