Belize joined the International Labour Organization (ILO) on 17 November 1981, formalizing its commitment to upholding the principles of decent work and social justice. Through its membership, the Government and social partners have direct access to ILO technical expertise and resources that support policy development based on international labour standards with an aim to reduce poverty, inequalities, and informality of the labour market.

To address current and future challenges, the Government and social partners are preparing to launch a new DWCP in 2024 centred on jobs and enterprises, rights at work, social protection, and social dialogue.
