Social protection in the Gulf countries: what rights can migrant workers access?

This event will launch a first-of-a-kind comprehensive report on migrant workers’ access to social protection across the GCC countries: Social protection for migrant workers in countries of the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC): A regional mapping of provisions on paper and in practice – prepared by ILO, in collaboration with ODI and IOM.

Workshop with GCC governments promotes a rights-based approach to employment contract termination for migrant workers in the Gulf

The ILO, together with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), UN Women and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), and the GCC Executive Bureau co-hosted a workshop with representatives of the six GCC governments (United Arab Emirates, Kingdom of Bahrain, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Sultanate of Oman, State of Qatar and State of Kuwait) to discuss legislation, policies, reforms, good practices and remaining challenges in addressing issues around ‘unexplained absences’ from the workplace.

Training on identifying cases of forced labour of migrant workers in Kuwait supports government officials and company representatives to address an important challenge

Between 13-15 March 2023, the ILO organized a three-day training on forced labour and trafficking in persons for staff of the labour inspectorate, the labour relations department, the domestic workers department, the shelter (for victims of labour exploitation), and the international relations department of the Public Authority for Manpower. A separate workshop was held for companies, focussing on how tools available to help strengthen business’ ability to combat forced labour and trafficking in persons.

FAIRWAY hosts webinar for Jordanian journalists on reducing discrimination and promoting positive perception of migrants in the context of COVID-19

The webinar focused on the importance of the role of the media in promoting a balanced public understanding of migration, and rights-based language and reporting styles when reporting on migrant workers. The event is part of a broader FAIRWAY Programme strategy to tackle discrimination against migrants, including through innovative social media campaigns.
